He has had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1982, and at the Mills College Art Gallery, Oakland, California, in 1992. In 1995, after a rare interview with the artist, Calvin Tomkins wrote an extensive profile of York for The New Yorker. In 2001, York received the Francis J Greenburger Award. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; the Parrish Art Museum, Southampton, New York; the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Lincoln, Nebraska; and the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut.
