DENTON WELCH (1915–1948) was both a writer and a painter. Long considered a major "minor" British author, his work has intrigued successive generations (William Burroughs acknowledged his influence). His relatively small oeuvre includes three masterpieces: Maiden Voyage, In Youth is Pleasure, and A Voice Through A Cloud. His journals are some of the most memorable of the twentieth century. An exemplary biography by James Methuen-Campbell, Denton Welch, Writer and Artist was published in 2004.
