WILLEM DE KOONING (1904–1997) is widely recognized as one of the most
important American artists of the twentieth century. He was a main figure in
the Abstract Expressionist New York School. His canvases, drawings, and
sculptures are included in all major museums collections. He was the subject of
a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1997.
